How to Measure Sulfur Dioxide Residues in Wine

Posted on May 28, 2024June 5, 2024 By briandeady No Comments on How to Measure Sulfur Dioxide Residues in Wine

Sulfur dioxide sensor (CAS 7446-09-5), also known as sulfuric acid, is used in industrial processes such as metal refining, disinfection and bleaching of paper and textiles. It contributes significantly to air pollution and can cause serious health issues such as breathing difficulties, eyes and bronchi irritation. A personal SO2 gas detector is vital for workers in such environments to alert them of dangerous exposure levels.

This article presents a simple and inexpensive approach for on-site detection of SO2 residues using an improvised colorimetric sensor array based on the use of specific and highly sensitive color reactions. The array is capable of discriminating between different concentrations of SO2 in model wine samples, and is able to reach a decision on whether the sulfur dioxide content of real wine exceeds standards within five minutes. The sensitivity of the sensors is evaluated by comparison with those of commercially available sulfite analyzers, as well as with those of a sulfite monitoring kit for liquid model wines.

Measuring Ozone Levels: Understanding the Importance of O3 Meters

The sensor in the SO2 detector can be calibrated onsite to ensure it is measuring only the target gas. This allows for the monitor to be used immediately after installation and avoids the cost of purchasing additional calibrators or carrying out costly lab measurements in advance. The SO2 gas sensor is available in the Ranger and S Series handheld air quality monitors as well as the indoor fixed monitor Range 900. It is also a component of the AiroSwitch modular system, which allows for multiple gases to be measured on a single sensor head.
