How to Prepare for a Household Emergency

Posted on April 21, 2024May 15, 2024 By briandeady No Comments on How to Prepare for a Household Emergency

Homeownership often comes with unforeseen emergencies that require quick thinking and preparation. Whether it’s a sudden power outage or the discovery of a difficult-to-clog toilet, there are many household emergencies that could occur that would be difficult to deal with without advance planning.

Hushållsakuten can reach one another in the event of a household emergency by saving important phone numbers into their cell phones and writing them on contact cards. This list should include the emergency department, police station, nearby hospitals and an out-of-area emergency contact that family members can call if they are unable to reach one another.

A common household emergency is a fire, which can be especially dangerous for children, elderly people and those with health conditions. Teach family members how to escape their home and designate a meeting spot outside of the house where they should gather once they have evacuated. It’s also a good idea to practice escaping the house at least once a year and regularly test smoke alarms.

If a fire occurs, make sure everyone leaves the building as quickly as possible and shuts off any electrical equipment like televisions or computers. Smoke detectors can save lives and should be tested monthly, and their batteries replaced at least once a year. Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children, and avoid smoking in beds or near curtains or blinds. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can poison people and pets and should be taken seriously.
